Someday Plan

Most of us use the “Someday Plan”….
“Someday I will be happy”
“Someday I will enjoy the work that I do”
“Someday I will have the money to retire, or travel…”
But does the “someday plan” really work?
If we could comb a graveyard and ask those that have gone before us whether they accomplished all that they set out to do in life, many would probably say they did not. Why? Likely because they bought into the “someday plan”.
Have you noticed lately the amount of complaints friends or family seems to have about life? They lack joy and fulfillment. Why? Possibly because of some unfinished goal or accomplishment that they may have dreamed about but have not even tried to attain. Somewhere in their life’s journey, they may have bought into the “someday plan”.
Have you?
Face it. If you are not getting what you want out of life, not fulfilled, not learning what you need to learn while here in schoolhouse planet earth, or not making the difference in your life and the lives of those around you as you at one time thought you would, it is quite possible that you bought into the “someday plan”.
What is the “someday plan”?
I define it as a fantasy based on an individual’s unclear definition of success. It’s saying that you are going to have, do or be something without being specific about exactly what you want, why you want it and when you want to achieve it.
“I’m gonna work real hard and be rich…someday”
Why do so many of us buy into the “someday plan”?
First of all, it’s easy. It requires no action.
Secondly, it accommodates fear-- fear of failure, fear of success, fear of change -- whether ours or of those we respect around us. Succumbing to fear gives us permission to stay “safe” instead of take risks, procrastinate instead of pursue our passions, or insanely keep doing what we have always done while hoping and expecting different results. It makes us stick to the “someday plan”.
Thirdly, it gives a false sense of security.
Does it work?
The answer is an obvious “no”.
But here’s the good news!
The “someday plan” is not the only plan to live by. It’s not a signed contract. Even if you have stuck to the “someday plan” most of your life, you can choose to buy out of that plan and buy into a new one—starting now!
All you need to do is choose. As well-known inspirational writer, Earl Nightingale, once wrote, “People are where they are because that's exactly where they really want to be ... whether they'll admit that or not”. The choices you made in your past got you to where you are now. Your choices from here on in can start you on a new journey that will change you from being a victim of the “someday plan” to being a world-changer in big and small ways.
May I suggest a new plan…?
Dare to DREAM again.
Decide what you want and, most importantly, why you want it- what it means to you to achieve it. Be specific about it. Then work towards it.
Refuse to take “no” for an answer regardless of what obstacles come your way.
Employ your subconscious. Imagine yourself having what you want and feeling good about it.
Act as if you already have what you are aiming for. Take action towards making your dream a reality.
Map your treasure. Collect items - pictures, articles, memorabilia, etc – that remind you of what you are striving for and place them in prominent places where you will see them.
You have the tools. Now, take on a new attitude.
